Yesterday my office went without A/C for a little while. Which, I'm all about air conditioning, but I was kind of like "eh, you know it happens every summer." But, it's surprising how stuffy it can get when you can't open any windows!!
It reminds me of the summers I drove cars without A/C, which are more than the summers I've had A/C. I started driving at 15 with a learners and graduated to own my own with a license at 16. I drove a 1993 Ford Ranger 4X4 and it was the BEST THING EVER, because it was mine... ish. It had A/C bbuutt not really. Like, you could turn it on and sure if you got close enough to the vent you could feel the air, but since the truck would overheat all the time, I couldn't use it very often. That was two summers.
I bought a car at 18 when I had a really great job, and YAY it had A/C. But, it ended up being a POS that broke down more than I can count and the A/C only worked for one summer. When that car died I started driving my parents Camaro, which sounds good in theory, but if you have ever ridden in one without A/C on a HOT Georgia day... You would not like it. That was three summers and the remainder of my college career.
I got an internship in Atlanta out of college. I live roughly 40 miles outside the city. I did the drive a couple times in the Camaro, cause mind you I still didn't have my own car by then, and taking it into the city just didn't work out. So during my internship I drove my moms Ford Expedition (notice an AMERICAN car trend here? :-D) It had air, bbbuuttt the Freeon kind of ran out a lot so there were times without A/C. And God bless my mom, its her car and the A/C is still slowly dying.
So how many years is that? Let's add it up... two years with the truck plus one year in the Aurora; then almost four years total without my own car (how pathetic is that?) we're looking at 7 years of my driving career that I have gone without A/C.
Now, I am perfectly aware this is a "first world problem" however since I do live in a society that offers A/C I would like to benefit from it. Plus, it's really hard to work in corporate America smelling like a sweaty arm-pit. Luckily, I now drive a car with WONDERFUL A/C and finally I'm doing just fine in my hour and a half commute one way; um well, doing fine as far as A/C is concerned... I still sometimes wanna pull my own hair out.
Point? Well, you can live without A/C, but seriously it's kind of difficult.
Enjoy your day!
